Understanding Premature Ejactulation (PE)
What is premature ejaculation (PE)?
Many people are curious about what is, and what causes premature ejaculation (PE). Premature ejaculation is a condition in which a man ejaculates earlier than his or her partner would prefer during sexual intercourse. It is when a man’s ejaculation occurs before both partners are ready. This often leads to worry, stress, and concern for both parties and can take a psychological toll on both individuals. There is no standard of time given for how long a man should take before ejaculating but there are symptoms that may be a sign of premature ejaculation.
Symptoms of PE:
- A man is unable to control his ejaculation.
- Ejaculation prior to sexual intercourse, during penetration, or soon after.
- Ejaculation prior to both partners being ready.
How common is PE?
PE is actually a common type of dysfunction males experience during sexual activity. Sexual dysfunction for men under 40 years of age is even higher and premature ejaculation becomes even more common. Approximately 1 out of 3 men are affected by premature ejaculation to some degree.
What Causes Premature Ejaculation?
A combination of factors results in premature ejaculation. It is usually a combination of a hypersensitive penis or head of the penis, nervousness or performance anxiety during sexual intercourse. There is also the anxiety of not satisfying the partner, thus, causing more stress.
Causes of premature ejaculation can be related to:
- Thyroid complications
- Neurotransmitter irregularities
- Hormone imbalance
- Irregular reflex activity
- Tenderness and infection of the prostate or urethra
- Genetic irregularities
Premature ejaculation can also occur in combination with erectile dysfunction. When this occurs, the treatment aims at treating ED with the motive of treating PE second.
What are other effects derived from PE?
Relationship tension and difficulty: most patients complain about the stress and worry premature ejaculation has caused in their relationships. Premature ejaculation can cause internalized guilt, a lack of communication, and even resentment.
